Those
wanting to experience romantic Robinson feeling, have the opportunity to
do so in Tobago. Here and on the sister island of Trinidad there’s a
special kind of little lodges you won’t find anywhere else in the
Caribbean.
The
most exquisite of its kind lies hidden away in a quiet bay on the north
coast of Tobago. In the midst of 70 acres of untouched rain forest
adjoined by a palm beach, geologist Dr. Krishna Persad made a dream of
his come true. "We used local building materials only, such as raw
teak tree trunks for the outside walls and palm fronds for the
roofs," says the enthusiastic painter and nature photographer. But
they combined the use of these raw materials with the kind of luxury
Robinson Crusoe would never have dreamed of - the choice ranges from
air-conditioned rooms to private pools on the terraces.
First
class convenience and seclusion from the bustling tourist areas are the
main features of these nature lodges. Special attractions are provided
by the exotic fauna. The Arnos Vale Resort in Tobago is a real birds’
paradise. On the terrace of the main house of the former sugar cane
plantation, a cocktail with the hummingbirds at sunset is on the daily
agenda.
Brooding
leatherback turtles, by contrast, are the sensation on Trinidad’s
barely inhabited North coast. On the beach in front of the lodge in
Grand Riviere, up to 60 of these primeval sea giants build their nests
each night from March to September - right on the guest rooms’ front
