Parrots
and orchids are greatest obstacles for the mountain bikers in Trinidad
Trinidad’s
jungle is full of challenges for mountain bikers: uprooted jungle giants
blocking the way, steep muddy tracks, and streamlets that suddenly turn
into huge waterfalls. But what finally makes even the toughest pedaling
knights get off their bike are the wonders by the wayside: no-one rides
past flowering orchids, giant butterflies or colorful exotic birds that
easily..

A
mountain bike is the ideal vehicle for exploring Trinidad. The landscape
is a combination of steep mountains covered in rain forest, craggy
stretches of coast, and green lowland. "There’s a dense
network of paths and tracks that dates back to the time of the
plantations, and some of them have been in use since the days prior to
Columbus’ arrival by the Amerindians", says Courtenay Rooks, who
used his bike to explore the most remote corners off his own bat.
For
visitors he worked out biking tours along these tracks that lead all
across the land. "It’s the small places off the main routes where
you can best get to know the mixture of Caribbean, African and Indian
culture", the islander raves. "But what makes it fascinating
is the exotic nature, the great views, the colorful birds and exotic
plants – even the most fanatic bikers will stop in utter
amazement at a huge blue Morpho butterfly!" Rooks is the one to
know - he works as a nature guide and manages a project for the
